Integrating elementary science into
ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY

This project is made possible by the generous support of the Museum of Science, the Intel Foundation, the National Science Foundation, the Massachusetts Board of Education Pipeline Fund, the National Institue of Standards and Technology, and Hewlett Packard. for teachers.

The SFSM in partnership with the Museum of Science, Boston.

The Motivation
As our society becomes increasingly dependent on engineering and technology, it is imperative that our young people understand these fields. Educators across the country are working to infuse engineering and technology into classrooms. The Engineering is Elementary project supports elementary school learning of engineering and technology with curricular materials and teacher professional development opportunities.

Collaboration
EiE is working with educational organizations across the United States to introduce engineering to children and educators in their local regions. Currently, we are collaborating with science museums, school districts, universities, and afterschool programs, in ten states.

Professional Development
EiE offers professional development workshops for educators. These sessions focus on introducing teachers to the curricular materials that we have developed, engage teachers in EiE student activities, and provide teachers with an overview of engineering concepts and skills.

For in depth curricular information, please visit the Museum of Science EiE page.

Curricular Materials

Engineering is Elementary

Each Engineering is Elementary unit engages students through an exciting engineering design challenge that will require them to apply their knowledge of an elementary school science topis. EiE units offer literacy connections and easily connect to mathematics and social studies lessons.

All Lesson Materials
Are available in English & Spanish
Meet National Standards for Technological Literacy
Meet Sunshine State standards

Unit Content
A storybook in which a child character engineers a solution to a problem. Each story features a child from a different country and background, demonstrating that with some creativity and knowledge of the engineering design process, everyone can engineer!
Lesson plans with detailed instructions for teachers.
Duplication masters with photocopyready handouts for students.
Background information and additional resources for teachers.
Assessment sheets and rubrics.
